In short: Visitors from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini are already in your GA4 data, hidden as referral traffic from domains like chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai. Ten minutes of setup collects them into a dedicated AI channel you can track over time. But mind the interpretation: The numbers are a floor. Much AI driven traffic arrives without a trace of its origin, so what GA4 shows you is less than what is actually happening.
Where do you find AI traffic in GA4?
- Go to Reports, then Acquisition and Traffic acquisition
- Switch the primary dimension to «Session source/medium»
- Search for chatgpt in the table filter
Visits from ChatGPT appear as referrals from chatgpt.com (or chat.openai.com). Repeat for perplexity, copilot, gemini and claude. If you see rows there, the AI models have already started sending you customers.
How do you collect it all in a dedicated AI channel?
- Go to Admin, Data display and Channel groups, and copy the default group
- Create a new channel, name it for example «AI traffic», and place it at the top of the order
- Set the condition to source matching a regular expression of AI domains:
chatgpt\.com|chat\.openai\.com|perplexity\.ai|copilot\.microsoft\.com|gemini\.google\.com|claude\.ai
From then on, AI traffic has its own row in your reports, with its own sessions, engagement and conversions. Tie it to your key events (demo bookings, form submissions) and you see not just that AI sends people, but what they are worth.
Why do the numbers understate reality?
- App traffic has no referrer. Clicks from the ChatGPT app and several other AI surfaces often arrive without a referrer and land in direct traffic. Part of the growth you see in «direct» may actually be AI.
- Google's AI answers are not labeled. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are reported as regular google / organic. GA4 cannot separate them from classic search clicks.
- Much AI influence produces no click at all. More and more people get the answer, including the recommendation of a business, without clicking through. The influence happens before your website is even involved.
The conclusion is not that the numbers are worthless, but that they are a floor: When your AI channel shows growth, the real growth is bigger.
What does the traffic tell you, and what does it not?
AI traffic in GA4 shows the result of your visibility: The people who clicked. It does not show how often you get recommended, what the models say about you, or which sources they build on, the visibility that created the clicks. That measurement requires querying the models systematically, as covered in our guide to measuring AI visibility. And remember the time horizon: It typically takes weeks before new content starts getting cited, so give both the content and the numbers time.
