In short: How fast do AI models pick up new content? Analysis of agent logs from ChatGPT and Claude shows half of new pages got their first citation within about a week, three out of four within 19 days, but it took 37 days before 9 out of 10 pages were underway. The lesson: AI visibility does not happen overnight. Give the strategy at least 30 days, work continuously, and measure week by week.

What do the numbers show?

The analysis builds on agent logs from ChatGPT and Claude between March and May 2026. It followed newly published pages and measured the time until the models cited them for the first time:

The spread is the real finding. Some pages get picked up almost immediately, others take weeks for exactly the same job. Where you land is not random.

Why is it fast for some and slow for others?

Before a page can be cited, three things must happen: AI crawlers must find and fetch it, the model must understand what it answers, and it must win as a source against established pages with existing authority and citation history. The fast pages typically share three traits: They are technically accessible to AI crawlers, they are built with an answer-first structure that makes them easy to cite, and they live on sites that already get cited. New sites without history start at the back of the queue.

What does this mean for your strategy?

  1. Give the strategy at least 30 days. Concluding after two weeks means concluding before 9 out of 10 pages have had their chance. Patience is not a virtue here, it is a methodological necessity.
  2. Work continuously, not in bursts. Publish steadily and you always have content maturing, and no single page's wait matters. One big content drop followed by silence gives you one long wait, then nothing.
  3. Measure week by week. The first citation is the starting gun, not the finish line. With continuous measurement you see when content starts working, which pages get cited, and where to double down.

What do we do with this ourselves?

This insight is why we run our content engine in steady monthly batches rather than campaigns: When maturation takes weeks, consistency is the strategy. And it is why we measure citations continuously instead of checking now and then. The traffic side of the same picture, by the way, is covered in our Google Analytics guide.
